The one who flooded a planet, split a sea, drew water from a rock, and turned water into wine ends up unable to get a sponge full of it. How does the I Am become the I Thirst?

In this fifth message, we turn to John 19:28-29, where Jesus says he is thirsty and a Roman soldier lifts sour wine to his lips without knowing he is fulfilling a thousand year old psalm. This is not irony. It is God coming close enough to be dehydrated with us.

This lesson reminds us that the question is not whether you are thirsty, but what you are drinking. Money, pleasure, status, and even religious performance dull the ache the way novocaine dulls pain, and you have to keep going back. Come to the one who was empty on your behalf, and drink something that lasts.
