Frequently Asked Questions

“Where and when are the church’s services?”

The family of believers at Jonesboro meets at 103 Lake Jodeco Road, Jonesboro, GA, every Sunday at 9:00 a.m. for Bible study (ages 2 through adult); 9:50 a.m. for communion, prayer, singing, and a sermon; and at 5:00 p.m. for another adult Bible study and a special class for the youth. We also invite you to attend our Bible study (ages 2 through adult) on Wednesday evenings at 7:30.

“What should I wear?”

The most important part of your dress is to be covered in a reverent mind, clothed in a worshipful heart, and dressed in a humble spirit. Since we are a church who ministers to the whole community, then you should expect to see a wide range of dress. However, we would ask you to consider the New Testament exhortation against dressing immodestly or grooming so as to attract attention to one’s self (1 Timothy 2:9, 10; 1 Peter 3:3). It is really very simple: God looks at your heart and we are happy for your presence.

“How long are your services?”

Our services range from one hour to one hour and fifteen minutes.

Here is a basic rundown:

  • Sunday morning class is from 9:00-9:40 a.m.

  • Sunday morning worship service is from 9:50-11:00 a.m.

  • Sunday night class is from 5:00-6:00 p.m.

  • Wednesday evening service is from 7:30-8:30 p.m.

“What are your services like?”

The worship services are simple, orderly and traditional in nature, usually limited to about an hour to an hour and fifteen minutes. At all of our services we sing, pray, read and teach from the Bible. The Lord’s Supper is observed and a collection is taken only on Sunday. You are invited to engage in all congregational worship activities.

Like the first century Christians, the members of the congregation sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs (Ephesians 5:19) unaccompanied by musical instruments. Our praise to God is to come from the heart (Colossians 3:16).

Public prayers are offered in understandable English (1 Corinthians 14:15). Customarily, each person with bowed head listens quietly to the prayer being offered as if it were his or her own petition being offered.

The Lord’s Supper, instituted to memorialize Jesus’ death on the cross (Matthew 26:26-29; 1 Corinthians 11:26), consists of unleavened bread and the fruit of the vine (grape juice). These elements, emblematic of our Savior’s body and blood, are passed to the congregation for each individual believer to partake. It is a time of sober reflection and self examination when one contemplates and considers the great love and sacrifice of our Lord, Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 11:27-29).

The work of this congregation is supported solely by free-will offerings (1 Corinthians 16:2) of its individual members. Sunday morning is the only time you will see the collection basket passed, and then it is intended only for our members. There are no fund-raising activities or programs where the community is solicited to support our efforts in carrying out our mission. Visitors are not expected to contribute financially at Jonesboro.

A part of the worship service on Sunday morning is devoted to Bible-based preaching. The sermons are simple, thought-provoking lessons designed to be relevant and useful to aid the hearer in his daily walk with God.

We like to think of ourselves as being a friendly and hospitable group and want you to remember us that way. After the close of any service, you are encouraged to linger a few minutes and let us meet you and get to learn more about how we can help you on your journey to heaven.

“Will I have to say anything, sign anything, or be singled out?”

You will not be put on the spot, singled-out, or embarrassed in any way. Though we do receive an offering every Sunday morning, we do not want you to feel obligated in any way to give. We are not interested in your money, only in your honored presence. We do like to collect some basic information from people on our visitor’s cards so we can have a record of your visit and perhaps even follow up with a card or with an in-home Bible study, but if you would prefer not to provide any information, then that is perfectly acceptable.

“What kind of church are you?”

The Jonesboro church of Christ is a non-denominational, independent group of believers who make it our primary aim to walk with God every day. We do not claim to be the only Christians, but we do strive to be Christians only. The blood-covered sinners who worship God at Jonesboro are simply Christians attempting to replicate first century Christianity in a twenty-first-century world. As seekers of truth, our primary goal is to be diligent investigators of the Word of God and to be intimately connected to the God of the Word. We believe that this two-fold pursuit of God and His word will produce a commitment to a lifestyle of worship that begins on Sunday and propels us throughout the week. We are eager for you to join us in a pursuit of God and His word as we worship Him in our everyday lives.

All children from 2 years old and up are encouraged to participate in both our Sunday a.m. and Wednesday p.m. Bible studies. We have a highly qualified group of God-gifted teachers who are eager to assist your children in their spiritual development. We also now have a minister on staff, Nathaniel Collum, who is especially motivated and gifted to minister to our youth. He not only teaches many of the high school classes, but also plans, implements, and chaperones many activities throughout the year. We would love to have your children participate in our youth group.
